Building a Riparian Buffer:
After tackling the briar patch that was our property's edge, we removed numerous invasives; Porcelain Berry, Multiflora Rose, Asiatic Bittersweet, Norway Maple and Garlic Mustard, replacing these with a border of berry and nut producing trees and bushes.
Our new Riparian Buffer consists of trees and bushes that benefit wildife, insects and birds.
Sourwood, Shadbush and Linden for the bees. White Oak for the mammals. Deciduous Holly, Blackhaw Viburnum, Elderberry and Crabapples for the birds. Pawpaw and Sassafras trees for us.
Now we deliver copious amounts of leaves and woodchips gathered from the neighbors to build the soil - this area bursts with wildlife and is truly alive.
Flickers live here as do Redheaded Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Robins and Bluejays. Orioles visit and Hummingbirds too.
What was once an eyesore has turned into a delightful oasis.
